In Southeast Asian countries, particularly Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia, Bangladesh and Thailand, bolsters are designed to be hugged during sleep. In Vietnam, it's called g? A jukbuin is used in summer to cool down during sleep, because the hollow construction of thin bamboo pieces allows air to flow through the pillow. Someone tightly wrap their arms and legs around the jukbuin while sleeping.
Western countries
In western countries, bolsters are usually placed in the head of one's bed and serve as a back or lower support, or as a support arm on furniture with a high rigid side. The bolster pillow is also used as a bumper in the crib and to relax on the floor in the family room and children.
In the United States, the "body pillow" resembles a bolster and is designed to be hugged while sleeping.
