In 1996, the AHA created a financial and legal model for the mixed income community or MICs , that is, communities with different owners and tenants of income levels, including public- as component. This model is used by the HOPE VI revitalization program of the US Department of Housing and Urban Development. In 2011, it has resulted in all housing projects being destroyed, with partial replacement by MIC.
The first, Centennial Place, has been recognized by the HUD and Urban Land Institute. In 2007, Centennial Place has a math school, science and technology-focused school, YMCA, branch bank, daycare facility, and retail stores. There are plans to include a unit of home ownership.
In 2011, the agency also knocked down Roosevelt House and the towering Palmer House's senior citizens and moved residents to other properties. However, John O. Chiles and Cosby Spear senior senior citizens remain open.
The AHA takes advantage of the loose federal regulations that are in effect until 2010 to undermine all remaining communities. The agency offers eligible residents various relocation options and long-term assistance that include good federal leased-rent vouchers anywhere in the country. However, not all residents qualify for vouchers.
