The Great Commandment â€
src: hollycardone.com

The Great Commandment (or the Greatest Commandment) is the name used in the New Testament to illustrate the first of the two commandments cited by Jesus in Matthew 22: 35-40 and Mark 12: 28-34 . These two commands are paraphrases taken from the Old Testament and are generally regarded as important to Jewish and Christian ethics.

In Mark, when asked "which is a great commandment in the law?", The Greek New Testament reports that Jesus answered, "Hear, O Israel! God our God our Lord is one: Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and with all your mind ", before referring to the second commandment," Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. "Most Christian denominations regard these two commandments as the core of true Christian lifestyles.

Injil Matius

Then one of them, who was a lawyer, asked questions, teased, and said, Master, who is a big command in law? Jesus said to him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and the first command. And the second is like that, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. These two commandments depend on all the laws and the prophets.

Gospel of Mark

In the Gospel of Mark, the Shema includes:

And one of the scribes came, and after hearing them think together, and seeing that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all? And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one God: And love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy might: this is the first commandment. And the second like this, that is, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. There is no other order greater than this.

Gospel of Luke

And, look, a certain lawyer stands up, and tempts him, saying, Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life? He said to him, What is written in the law? how are you And he replied, â € Å"You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might, and with all your mind; and your neighbors as yourself. And he said to him, Thou answerest verily: this do, and thou livest.

Gospel of John

He then receives the sop directly out: and it's been late. Therefore, as he went out, Jesus said, Now the Son of Man is glorified, and the Lord is glorified in him. If God be glorified in him, God will also glorify him in him, and will immediately glorify him. Little children, but I'll be with you soon. You will look for me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye can not come; so now I tell you. A new commandment I give you, that ye may love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. With this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love one with another. Simon Peter said to him, Lord, where are you going? Jesus answered him, Where I am going, you can not follow me now; but you must follow me afterwards.

Love the Lord your God

Matthew Henry summarizes the question which is a great command:

That is a question that is debated among the critics in the Law. Some people will have the Circumcision Law to be the Great Commandment, the other the Law of the Sabbath, the other the Law of Sacrifice, according to them gradually stand affected, and deplete their spirits; now they will try what Christ says for this question, hoping to incite people against him, if he can not answer according to a vulgar opinion; and if he had to enlarge a single command, they would reflect on it as slandering the rest.

Adam Clarke, dalam bukunya Commentary on the Bible , menulis:

This is the first and the main command. This is "first and largest":

  1. In antiquity ; becoming as old as the world, and engraved essentially in our nature.
  2. In his dignity ; directly and immediately proceeding from and referring to God.
  3. In excellence ; became the command of the new covenant, and the spirit of the Divine adoption.
  4. In justice ; ; because it only makes God his right, preferring it before all things, and securing for him the proper rank in relation to them.
  5. In sufficiency ; by itself capable of making a saint in this life, and happy in the other.
  6. In fruitful ; because that is the root of all orders, and the fulfillment of the law.
  7. In virtue and efficacy ; because with this alone God has power in the hearts of men, and man is united with God.
  8. Within the its ; leaving nothing to the creature, which does not refer to the Creator.
  9. In his/her needs ; totally irreplaceable.
  10. In its duration ; became steadfast on earth, and never ceased in heaven.

"Thou shalt love the Lord thy God" are defined "Act in such a way so that God will be loved by all His creatures." As a result, Israel, as, as a priest-man, commands as Aaron's priest to sanctify the name of God and avoid anything that tends to tarnish it (Leviticus xxii 32), not only obliged to give his life as a witness or martyr. for the maintenance of the true faith (cf. Isa. xlii. 12, ????????; and Pesik. 102b; Sifra, Emor, ix.), but also to commit itself in every way to prevent the name of Allah is not respected by those non-Israelites.

Twice every day the Jews recite Shema Yisrael , which contains the words: "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, with all thy soul, and with all thy might" (Deuteronomy 5). This verse is understood to command him to willingly submit his life and luck every time the cause of God sue him, while at the same time pushing him to make God loved by all his creatures through good deeds, as Abraham (Sifre, 32).

Although only asked about the first command, Jesus enters the second commandment in his reply. This double reference has given rise to different views with respect to the existing relationship between the two commandments, though usually "love your Lord" is called the "first and greatest commandment", with "love your neighbor" which is called the "second great command." It may simply reflect the "seven rules (Middot) Hillel", in this case the first, is called? Al wa-? Omer (Hebrew: ??????).

Love your neighbor as yourself

When asked which is the greatest commandment, the Christian New Testament describes Jesus paraphrasing the Torah: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind," before also paraphrasing the second verse ; "You must love your neighbor as yourself." Most Christian denominations view these two commandments as, together, form the core of Christianity, the second being regarded as the Golden Rule (about 1300 BC).
