Edville Gerhardt Abbott (November 6, 1871 - August 27, 1938) was an American orthopedic surgeon and orthotist. He was born in Hancock, Maine, and was educated at Bowdoin College. She is buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Portland, Maine.
He is best known for his non-blood method of treatment of lateral curvature of the spine (scoliosis). In 1913 he managed to show his method results at orthopedic congresses in Berlin, Germany, in England and on the Continent. There he is called the "Orthopedic Genius" for his successful treatment of scoliosis. And he made the first in the world of modern plastic scoliosis from celluloid in 1917. He is an orthopedic professor at Bowdoin College and connected with Maine General Hospital, Children's Hospital, etc. He practiced medicine in Portland, Maine. Children's Hospital, 68 High Street is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites March 7, 2012. According to news archive, Drs. Edville Abbott and Harold A. Pingree and Frank W. Lamb founded a children's hospital for handicapped children together in 1908. Closed in 1948, with most of the 56 patients at the time transferred to Maine General Hospital, the later renamed the Maine Healthcare Center.
Abbott, the second son of Alonzo and Maria B. (Mercer) Abbott, was born in Hancock, November 6, 1871. He received an early literary education at Hancock Public School and at the East Maine Conference Seminary in Bucksport, Maine, where he graduated in 1889. Over the next six years he was associated with his father and brother in the granite business, with general oversight of their mines in Mt. The island is remote.
He entered the medical department of Bowdoin College in 1895, from which he graduated in 1898. Subsequently, he was appointed a home doctor to the Maine General Hospital, where he served a year. The following year was spent in Boston and New York, studying orthopedic surgery specialties. Still desiring to attain the highest knowledge and the greatest skill level in his profession, he went abroad and continued his studies in orthopedics, passing a year at Friedrich-Wilhelms-UniversitÃÆ'¤t, Berlin. Returning to the US in 1901, he opened an office in Portland, and from then on he devoted his entire attention to an orthopedic surgical subject. His success in his profession is remarkable and his practice is immense and covers a vast field.
After returning from his work in Europe, unsatisfied with his literary achievements, he re-entered Bowdoin College, pursuing regular courses and receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree. With a further desire for a more intimate acquaintance with literature, he still continued his studies at this institution and two years later received a Master of Arts promerito.
Abbott is the chief of surgery at Children's Hospital; orthopedic surgeon to Maine General Hospital; visit the surgeon to St. Hospital Barnabas; consultation of surgeons to Sisters' Hospital, and instructor in orthopedic surgery at Maine Medical School, Bowdoin College.
His activities have not ended with his professional success, but he has been connected with various companies and has been interested in all civilian questions.
He is a member of several fraternities of Greek letters, a member of the Cumberland County Medical Society, the Maine Medical Association, the American Medical Association, and frequently contributes articles to leading medical journals in the country. He is also interested in business affairs and his initial experience is invaluable. He is a director of the Fidelity Trust Company, a member of the Council of Commerce, and is connected with various companies. In politics, where he has devoted much time with no small benefit to his party, he is a tough Republican.
Abbott is also Assistant Sec'y of the Maine Association Opposing the Right to Choose for Women. Mrs. EG Abbott is a member of the Board of Managers of Female Orphan Asylum, Vice President of the Portland District Nursing Association of Portland, member of the Parish House Committee of State Street Church, member of the Parish Banquets Committee of State Street Church, Chairman of the Hospital Committee of Fruit and Madelyn Shaw Flower, Children's Hospital.

Abbott's Method - treatment of scoliosis with lateral withdrawal and spinal cord retraction by means of wide bandages and bandages, until deformity is corrected excessively, and then applying the jacket plaster to produce pressure, back pressure, and spinal fixation in the correct position.
Abott's Sign - a clear lateral curvature of the spine, when physically observed in the back of patients suffering from scoliosis.
