The Battle of the Church of New Hope was fought from May 25-26, 1864, between the forces of Major General William T. Sherman and the Tennessee Confederate Army under General Joseph E. Johnston during the Atlanta Civil War Atlanta Campaign. The battle was the result of Sherman's attempts to outsmart Johnston.

Battle

After Johnston retreats to the Allatoona Pass on May 19-20, Sherman decides that he will most likely pay a fortune to attack Johnston there, so he decides to move around Johnston's left wing and steal the march towards Dallas. Johnston anticipated Sherman's move and moved his troops into Sherman's way, concentrating a new lineup at New Hope Church. Sherman mistakenly assumed that Johnston had the power of marks and ordered XX Corps Major General Joseph Hooker to attack. Advancing with three divisions in a parallel route, Hooker pushed the Confederate skirmisher back as far as three miles, before coming to Johnston's main line.

Difficult terrain prevents Hooker coordinating his corps attacks effectively, causing his men to suffer severe casualties, especially from tubes and shrapnel. On May 26, both parties are entrenched, and skirmishing continues throughout the day. At the end of the battle, Confederate Captain Samuel T. Foster reported that 703 Union soldiers had been killed, and 350 were imprisoned. The next day, Union forces concentrated their efforts in the area toward the northern end of the Confederate line, resulting in the Battle of the Pickett Plant.
