History
This property started as an ancient ancient boarding house called "The Glenwood Cottage", built by engineer/surveyor Christopher Columbus Miller and on November 22, 1876, Millers took their first paying guest. In February 1880, Miller's son, Frank Augustus Miller, bought the hotel and landed from his father. It evolved into a full service hotel in the early 1900s because of the booming orange-economy of California and warm weather, attracting wealthy tourists and investors from the East Coast and Europe. In 1902, Frank changed his name to "Glenwood Mission Inn" and began to build, in various styles, until he died in 1935.
Miller's vision for eclectic structure is drawn from many periods of historical design, revival, influence, and style. Some of them are Spanish Gothic architecture, Revival Mission architecture, Moorish Revival architecture, Spanish Colonial style architecture, Spanish Colonial Revival Style architecture, Renaissance Renaissance architecture, and the architecture of the Mediterranean Awakening Style. With one part above the other, the addition after the addition, the result is a complex and complicated structure. It contains a narrow alley, exterior arcade, medieval style clock, five-floor rotunda, lots of terraces and windows, castle towers, towers, a Cloister Wing (with catacombs), flying support, Mediterranean dome and sky crossing bridges among many other features.
During the construction period of 30 years, Miller traveled the world, collecting treasures to be brought back to the hotel for display.
St. Francis Chapel had four large glass windows and two original mosaics by Louis Comfort Tiffany in 1906. The windows were rescued from the Presbyterian Church of Madison Square and the chapels were built to accommodate them. The Mexican-Baroque-style "Rayas Altar" is 25 feet wide by 16 feet, carved from cedar and completely covered in gold leaf. For "The Garden of the Bell," Miller collected over 800 bells, including one dating from 1247 described as "the oldest bell in the Christian world."
In 1932, Frank Miller opened St. Louis. Francis Atrio. "The Famous Fliers' Wall", added by Miller's son-in-law, DeWitt Hutchings, is used to recognize famous aviators, including Amelia Earhart. On March 20, 1942, World War I ace Eddie Rickenbacker was honored at the Inn, becoming a seventy-seventh leaflet added to the monument. Today, 151 leaflets or aviator groups are honored with their signatures etched into the 10 inch (250 mm) copper wing attached to the wall.
Frank Miller died in 1935 and the Inn continued under the management of his daughter and son-in-law, Allis and DeWitt Hutchings, who died in 1956. The Inn subsequently underwent a series of ownership changes and some of the older rooms converted into apartments and used as dormitories for UC Riverside. In the early 1960s, St. John's College considered buying it as a location for his campus in the west but left the negotiations when John Gaw Meem donated the land in Santa Fe.
The hotel was later acquired by Carley Capital Group and closed for renovation in 1985 at a cost of $ 55 million. The new structural issues found cost more than expected and caused the company to fall behind loan payments to the New York bank. This led to a job in a nearly finished hotel to be stopped, just weeks before the planned opening in December 1988 as Omni Mission Inn. In December 1992, the Inn was sold to Duane Roberts, a Riverside businessman and a lover of the Inn. Roberts completed the renovation and reopened to the public shortly thereafter.
Today, AAA Four Diamond Historic Mission Inn Hotel & amp; Spa continues to reflect the original splendor initiated by founder Frank Miller, under the ownership of Kelly and Duane Roberts. The hotel offers several upscale dining options, a fitness center, Conde Nast Award-winning Kelly's Spa, an outdoor swimming pool and museum.
The Roberts has garnered many awards and awards in the 25 years that they have owned The Mission Inn Hotel & Spa. They have also made popular seasonal celebrations such as the Festival of Lights, and the Pumpkin Stroll.
