In May 1895, Queen Victoria officially assumed the Colonial government to adopt British military medals and give them to members of their local permanent military forces. The Cape of Good Hope introduced this system in September 1895 and, in 1896, instituted Meritorious Service Medal (Cape of Good Hope) .

Medals are a typical Colonial version of the British Meritorious Service Medal. It is combined with Meritorious Service Anniversities and is provided in limited quantities, usually after retirement, to eligible warrant officers and senior non-commissioned officers of the Tanjung Permanent Permanent Army who have completed twenty-one years of meritorious service.

Origin

The British Meritorious Service Medal was instituted by Queen Victoria on December 19, 1845 to recognize meritorious services by unassigned British Army senior officers. The medal was initially only given to the sergeant but, on June 10, 1884, eligibility was extended to all soldiers above the Corporal rank. The recipient is also granted the Meritorious Annuity Service, the amount based on the rating.

After the institute in 1845, a sum of public money of  £ 2,000 was provided annually to provide a Meritorious Service of £ 20 each to the Sergeant of the Regular Army as a reward for good, faithful and efficient service. This allows for a maximum of 100 British Army troops to receive annuities at any time and, since those elected to receive annuities are also awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, the medal is awarded sparingly. Although the sums budgeted for this annuity increase over time, further awards from medals and annuities are therefore limited only to registered candidates, recommended by their commanding officers, elected by the Commander of the Armed Forces from the list as the persons he deems most deserve to receive an annuity that may have fallen empty.

Cape Colonial Forces

At the end of the 19th century, the military forces of the Cape of Good Hope, colloquially known as the Cape Colony, consisted of three separate military organizations, the permanent Armed Frontier and the Installed Police and two part-time troops, the Burgher Force and the Volunteers, both district-based. The Colonial Army was founded in 1855, after the United Kingdom conferred the representative of the Cape of Good Hope in 1853.

Adoption

On May 31, 1895, Queen Victoria authorized the Dominion and Colonial government to adopt the Meritorious Service Medal, as well as the Advanced Behavioral Medal and Army Long Service and the Medal of Good Behavior, and awarded them to the permanent members of their local military forces. The Cape of Good Hope introduced this system in September 1895 and the Meritorious Service Medal (Cape of Good Hope) instituted by Royal Warrants on September 29, 1896.

The Cape Medal is identical to the British medal on the front, but has an additional "CAPE OF GOOD HOPE" inscription on the back. Other areas that take advantage of authorizations include Canada, India, Natal, New South Wales, New Zealand, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and, from 1901, the Commonwealth of Australia. The second version of most of these medals, with the statue of King Edward VII on the front, was introduced after the succession to the throne in 1901.

Order in use

In the order of use determined by the British Central Chancery of the Order of Knighthood, the Meritorious Service Medal (Cape of Good Hope) ranks equivalent to the British Meritorious Service Medal. It takes prelude after the Loyal and Loyal Service Medal of Queen Elizabeth II and before the Accumulated Campaign Service Medal.

South Africa

With the effects of April 6, 1952, when a new set of South African decorations and medals were instituted to replace the British award used up to now, older English decorations and medals that apply to South Africa continue to be worn in the same order, but, with the exception of the Victoria Cross, takes precedence after all South African orders, decorations and medals are awarded to South Africa on or after that date. Of the official British medal applicable to South Africa, the Meritorious Service Medal (Cape of Good Hope) takes precedence as shown.

  • Preceded by the Meritorious (English) Service Medal (MSM).
  • Succeeded by Meritorious Service Medal (Christmas).

Medals were hit with silver and disc, 36 millimeters in diameter and with rims on both sides. In the Queen Victoria version, the suspender mount is a double-toe claw, while the King Edward VII version has a one-footed claw.

The front of the first version of the medal carries the statue of Queen Victoria, constrained "VICTORIA REGINA ET IMPERATRIX". King Edward VII's version has a King statue in Field Marshal uniform, limited to "EDWARDVS VII REX IMPERATOR".

Back

The opposite of both versions has the words "FOR MERITORIOUS SERVICE" in three lines, surrounded by laurel bouquets and overcome by Imperial Crown. At the top, above the crown and wreath, it says "CAPE OF GOOD HOPE" in a curved line.

Ribbon

The bands are the Old Army and the Medal of Good Hope (Cape of Good Hope). While the British Meritorious Meritorious Medal Medal tape was plain until mid-1916, the Cape of Hope medal ribbon was 32 millimeters wide and red, with a 4-millimeter wide yellow ribbon in the middle.
