Academics
Osteopathic Medical Doctor
The medical school offers three main learning paths: traditional lecture discussion programs, problem-based learning programs, and directed courses, as well as two, three-year programs, all leading to the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. The Erie Campus offers three main lines, while the Bradenton and Greensburg campuses offer a curriculum based solely on problem-based learning.
Problem-Based Learning Pathway (PBL) emphasizes self-centered, student-centered learning through small group interaction, with limited faculty involvement. The PBL line is the only route on offer at the Bradenton and Greensberg campuses. Discussion Lecture (LDP) is a traditional curriculum in which subjects are taught in a lecture format. Basic science courses include dirty anatomy, biochemistry, immunology, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, and physiology. Clinical science is taught in a system-based format. The Directed Study Pathway (DSP) is a unique program, beginning with a significant daily class time in the first semester, which then transitions into a special "lesson-focused" module during the first two years of medical school.
Erie Campus offers two accelerated paths for primary care: Primary Care Scholars Pathway (PCSP) and Accelerated Physician Assistant Pathway. The Scholar Care Scholars program condenses four years of medical education to three years to graduate primary care physicians faster, and is aimed at students interested in family medicine. Accelerated Physician Assistant Pathway is a rapidly designed three-year medical school curriculum designed for applicants who have completed a physician assistant program. Applicants for this program must make a commitment to complete an osteopathic internship and residency upon graduation.
Doctor Pharmacy
The School of Pharmacy offers three pathways to the Doctor of Pharmacy program. One is a three-year, three-year curriculum based on the Erie campus, another is a four-year traditional curriculum offered on the Bradenton campus. In 2014, the School of Pharmacy adds a four-year distance education path for students across the United States. LECOM and Creighton University offer only two distance education paths for the primary PharmD degree in the country.
Doctor Dentistry
Faculty of Dentistry opened in mid-July 2012 for its first class consisting of 100 dentistry students. The School of Dentistry prepares students for general dentistry practice. First year dental students participate in problem-based learning as they prepare for clinical training. HR operates a full-service dentist office in Bradenton where a third year student takes care of patients under the supervision of a licensed dentist. In May 2015, the School opened a training site in Erie, PA and DeFuniak Springs, FL. Fourth graders complete their clinical training in these offices.
Postgraduate Study
LECOM offers four master degree programs. In January 2014, the College started a Master of Health Services Administration (MHSA) program. The LECOM MHSA program provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to plan, direct and coordinate medical and health services while working as hospital administrators or other healthcare facilities, public health care organizations and private practice groups. Knowledge gained from MHSA is essential for fiscal, managerial planning and work in health organizations and the establishment and management of clinical practice
The Master of Science in Medical Education program is designed for health care professionals interested in teaching. Distance options are available with online courses.
The Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences is a two-year program for students interested in careers in medicine, pharmacy and other health and science-related professions. The biomedical science program is a postgraduate program aimed at young graduate students who want to improve their understanding of biomedical sciences and improve their overall profile to get admission to medical school, pharmacy school, Ph.D. biomedical. program or enter the workplace of biomedical science (eg the pharmaceutical industry).
The Post-Graduate Program in Health Sciences Baccalaureate is a two-semester postgraduate baccalaureatate certificate program designed to improve the basic science credentials of students interested in a pharmacy or medical school. All courses are conducted on the LECOM campus by medical and pharmacy school facilities.
