The Sixth Hope Destruction Project is the ninth studio album by British singer-songwriter and musician PJ Harvey, released on April 15, 2016 on Island Records. The album is Harvey's first since his award-winning Letter Shakes Letter, released in 2011. At the 59th Annual Grammy Awards, the album was nominated for Best Alternative Music Album, his fourth nominee in the category and the seventh overall nomination.

The title of this album is a reference to the HOPE VI project in the United States, "where public housing is damaged in areas with high crime rates have been destroyed to make room for better housing, but with the effect that many of the previous population could no longer afford to live there, leading to the claim of social cleansing ". The HOPE VI program is directly referenced in the opening song of the album and the second single, "The Community of Hope". This title was inspired by Harvey's trip to Washington D.C. with photographer/filmmaker Seamus Murphy where he was given a tour by Paul Schwartzman of The Washington Post, which directly affects several lyrics on the song. Upon release, the song provoked direct criticism from politicians who ran for council seats in Ward 7 in Washington, D.C.

Background and development

Harvey wrote the song for the Project of the Destruction of Hope and his The Hollow of the Hand during his trip to Kosovo, Afghanistan and Washington DC with photographer/filmmaker Seamus Murphy between 2011 and 2014.

Recording

The album was created in an open session for the public as part of an art installation at Somerset House in London called Record in Progress . The sessions are forty-five minutes each and last for one month, starting on January 16, 2015 and ending on 14 February. Viewers can see Harvey making the album through one-way glass with Flood producer and John Parish, both of whom have worked on previous Harvey album Let England Shake .

Mobile phones and devices with recording capabilities were seized prior to entry and viewers were taken to the dungeon. During the first airing, he was working on a song titled "Near the Memorials to Vietnam and Lincoln", which was featured on the album. Harvey is reportedly playing violin, harmonica, and hurdy-gurdy. It was also reported that he joined musicians Terry Edwards and James Johnston and that Seamus Murphy was filming the entire session.

Critical reception

The Six-Hope Destruction Project generally received positive reviews from critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized ranking of 100 to reviews from mainstream publications, the album received an average score of 79, based on 31 reviews.

Greg Kot of the Chicago Tribune praised the album, writing that it "builds proficiently for one-two strong and close punches". Representative of the journalist Robert Christgau is more devoted to his praise, briefly describing the record as "Pollyically Pollyic, which means sharp observation, analytic release, and paradoxical melody that is forgiving again and again by pessimism and hating people ". This album is named after Mojo ' best ninth album of 2016 and Uncut ' the best sixth album from 2016.

More responses

Upon its release, the opening song and the second single, "The Community of Hope", invited direct criticism from a politician who nominated a board seat at Ward 7 in Washington, DC, with former DC Mayor Vincent C. Gray saying "I would not appreciate this silly composition with answers ", and his campaign treasurer Chuck Thies insult Harvey with" PJ Harvey is what music Piers Morgan is wire news. "Grant Thompson, a pastor and former congressman who ran for the ward council seat 7, stated that Harvey" needs to see more many more cities ".

Sometimes, the lyric content is criticized for politics without literally proposing government policy. Laura Snapes of Pitchfork asked, "By pointing out the problems in these three communities, but not proposing a solution, is he (Harvey) equally responsible for their desertion as a global force that came before him?"
