Sinopsis
Earl Hickey is a small time thief, living in the rural town of Camden, who lost a $ 100,000 lottery ticket after being hit by a car when he celebrated his good fortune. Lying in a hospital bed, he learned about karma during the talk show episode Last Call with Carson Daly . Convinced he must change his life to be happy, Earl surrenders himself to the power of karma. He makes a list of every bad thing and everyone he ever blames and tries to fix things up. After doing the first good deed, he found the $ 100,000 lottery ticket that had been lost. Seeing this as a sign of karma that rewards him for his commitment, Earl uses his new wealth to do more good deeds according to his list.
After divorcing from his wife Joy, and separated from their two children Dodge and Earl Jr., both had nothing to do with him, Earl moved into the motel and lived with his brother Randy, and they met Catalina, a pretty motel waiter who illegally emigrated from a place in Latin America. Earl works on a list that mostly involves strangers and old acquaintances he has wronged, but also contains items that involve his family. Joy originally planned to kill or blackmail Earl for a lottery win, but then gave up. Joy marries Darnell Turner, a mutual friend who works at a local restaurant called Crab Shack, and with whom he is having an affair. At the end of season One, Earl found that he had bought a lottery ticket using the money he stole from someone else, but when he tried to return his victory to that man, the latter had bad karma, so he returned the money to Earl.
Earl's second season continues to work on his list, however, Joy gets in trouble when he steals the delivery truck and ends up kidnapping and attacking the inside staff member. Joy was arrested for a severe crime that would keep him jailed for life because it was his third attack. To soften the jury, he decides to have a replacement baby for his stepbrother, Liberty Washington. When things did not go well in his trial, Earl sacrificed himself by admitting all of Joy's crimes, and was sentenced to two years in a state penitentiary. Also during the series, Catalina was deported, so Earl and Randy visited her home village in Latin America, and Randy married Catalina in a green card marriage so she could return to the United States.
In the third season, Earl is still in prison, but continues to do good deeds despite not having a list on him. She meets Frank, whom she rents the trailer from where Joy and her husband Darnell now live; while Randy gets a job as a prison guard to get closer to Earl. Meanwhile, Joy gave birth to Liberty's baby and Ray Ray. Earl's good deeds drew the attention of state warden Jerry, who offered Earl a reduction in jail time to help him solve his problems. When Earl will leave, Jerry lifts Earl's reduction because he will lose a productive helper, but Earl eventually grabs the upper hand and forces Jerry to honor his release early. After leaving the prison, Earl lost his trust in the list; he has spent years and the last of his lottery victories doing good things, but has nothing eternal to show for it, and insists that karma should give him some lasting gift now. He returns to his old and evil ways, doing cruel and illegal things until Frank's ex-boyfriend, Billie Cunningham, hit him in his car and made him into a coma; then then beat herself. Randy was able to revive Earl by working on his list. Earl finds Billie and marries her, thinking he is a gift of karma for many years. When Earl and Billie debated the list, and when Earl chose the list above him, Billie became a rampage when he canceled his good deeds. However, when Billie hides in the Amish "Camdenite" settlement, he changes his mind. He divorced Earl and gave him the rest of the insurance settlement money.
The fourth season again focuses on Earl doing good deeds to cross off the list. The main story during this season is that Darnell, who is actually a former assassin of a government secret agent, blows the protection of witness protection. He, Joy and his family were forced to change their identity and move on until Darnell's father, also from his agency, went on a mission with Darnell who cleansed them from need of protection. The season ends with a cliffhanger episode where Earl and the gang learn from the DNA test results that Earl is actually Dodge's biological father, but the biological father of Earl Jr. is not Darnell.

Production
Conception
Creator and head writer, Greg Garcia, wrote the pilot while working on another sitcom, Yes, honorable . He originally launched the series to Fox inherited series. He then approached NBC, who chose a pilot on a contingent basis, meaning they would order the pilot to provide the appropriate cast. Jason Lee was approached for the lead role, but was not interested in working on television and passed the series twice before finally agreeing to read the pilot script. Although he liked the pilot, he was hesitant to commit to the first role that TV starred to meet with Garcia, after which he signed a contract to play Earl Hickey.
Location
My name Is Earl is set in fictional Camden County. Creator Greg Garcia says:
In the "BB" episode, the Earl driver's license address is located in "Pimmit Hills Trailer Park, Space C-13, Camden County", but the country is not listed. Creator Greg Garcia says that Camden County is a loose model in Pimmit Hills, Virginia, the neighborhood where he grew up. The actual location in Los Angeles is not a trailer park, but it is built to look like one of them.
Many locations were filmed in San Fernando Valley in California. In episode 1 of "The Professor" season, Earl received a postcard from Alex with the address "Earl Hickey, The Palms Hotel RM 231, 9005 Lincoln Blvd, Camden USA" with Earl's hand covering most postmark. The Palms Motel is actually a motel in North Hills, California, now called Palm Tree Inn Motel. It's also used to film other shows and movies like Gilmore Girls, The Mentalists, and Heroes. Exterior photos of Crab Shack and Club Chubby are also taken from locations in Van Nuys and North Hills. Homes and shops for various characters come from locations in Van Nuys, Santa Clarita, Northridge, Moorpark, Los Angeles, and other Southern California cities. In the episode "No Paying Taxes", Earl and Randy climbed the Artesia water tower, though they did not name it by name.
Other episodes have listed countries that may not own Camden County. In the episode "Our Other Cops is On", officer Stuart Daniels stated that his surveillance equipment "should go to Camden, New Jersey, but come here". In "Earl and Joy's Anniversary", when the killer bee has attacked Camden and then left, Iqball says that the bees are heading to Texas. The episode flashback "Inside Probe" portrays Camden County as trying to remain independent during the American Civil War and establish its own country called Central, which lasts less than a day.
Cancellation and future
The series ended abruptly on May 19, 2009 after running for four seasons. Four seasons end with a 'To Be Further' caption. The serial producer, 20th Century Fox Television, approached the Fox, TBS and TNT networks to continue the series, but they could not achieve the requirement without "destroying the artistic integrity of the series."
In October 2011, Jason Lee told E! Online he has been in talks with Greg Garcia to complete the list through the movie, may be released online.
On October 1, 2013, creator Greg Garcia participated in the AMA on reddit.com. Fan Jerry Denton asked, "Who is Earl Jr.'s father? And has Earl ever completed the list?"
Garcia replied:
Critical reception
The show was well received by critics and spectators. One reviewer speculates that Earl's pride to lead a life of foolishness is what makes him cherished by the viewer, and that shows that there is a depth to his character beyond what was originally seen. Many negative and ambivalent reviews center on what counts as fanatical bases and humor.
Some critics claim this series has a bias or message Scientologist, with actors Jason Lee and Ethan Suplee being Scientologists. In 2008, Alec Baldwin publicly named Earl creator Greg Garcia as a Scientologist; Garcia quickly denied any involvement with Scientology, claiming that the Daily Mirror had mis-reported it as a Scientologist.
The series was nominated twice for the Best International Program at the British Academy Television Awards in 2007 and 2008. The premiere episode won an Emmy Award for Extraordinary Writing and Directed in Comedy Series for Greg Garcia and Marc Buckland respectively at the 58th Emmy Primetime Awards. Jaime Pressly won for an Extraordinary Supporting Actress in the Comedy series at the 59th Anniversary Emmy Awards. Other Emmy nominations include Beau Bridges and Giovanni Ribisi for Extraordinary Guest Actor in Comedy Series.
