Elbow Cay is an eight mile (13 kilometer) cay in the Abaco Islands in the Bahamas. Originally inhabited by British loyalists who fled from the newly independent United States in 1785, he survived by fishing, boat building, and saving. Its main village, Hope Town, surrounds a protected port with a hundred-and-twenty foot (37 meters) red-and-white lighthouse built in 1863.

Geography

Elbow Cay is located about 4 miles (6.4 kilometers) east of Marsh Harbor on Great Abaco Island. Most visitors fly to Marsh Harbor and take a ferry to Hope Town on the northern end of Elbow Cay or White Sound, the port and mid-island settlement developed in 1960. At the southern end of the island is the Tahiti Beach near Doros Cove. The Atlantic Ocean stretches along the east coast of Elbow Cay, while South Abaco Sound is on the west coast.

Elbow Cay is between Cay Man-O-War in the north and Tiloo Cay in the south. Lubbers Quarters Cay is on the western tip of the southern Elbow Cay.

History

Although visited by the earlier Lucayan Indians, the first known permanent inhabitant arrived in 1785 in a place known as Great Harbor. Wyannie Malone, from Charleston, South Carolina, and other British Loyalists left the United States for the nearest British territory in the Bahamas.

Elbow Cay and Abacos were very isolated until Marsh Harbor Airport was built in 1959. Prior to that, the residents survived with fishing, limited trade, and a rescue shipwreck at Elbow Reef. Since then, contact with the outside world has brought additional residents and tourism.

Hopetown initially served as the administrative center of Abacos, turning to Marsh Harbor in the 1960s

Today

Hopetown is the largest settlement containing several grocery stores including Vernons Grocery run by the descendants of Wyannie Malone, rental properties and restaurants. Hopetown Harbor Lodge is the largest hotel on the island in southern Hopetown. Cars and golf carts can be driven, but not through Hopetown. Further south, there are more residential and rental properties scattered along the road to the narrow part of the island near White Sound. The Abaco Inn and Seaspray property offers rooms and restaurants. At the southern end of the island is Tahiti Beach with beautiful sand beaches and snorkeling spots nearby at Tiloo Cut, a niche that separates Elbow Cay from Tiloo Cay.

There is telephone service, but the majority of the population depends on VHF radio to communicate.
