Life

Morgan Colt was born in Summit, New Jersey, on September 11, 1876. He attended Columbia University and qualified as an architect. He practiced this profession in New York City.

In 1912 Colt moved to New Hope, Pennsylvania, so he could dedicate his time to art. He built a houseboat, Deewaydin , which means staying with him with his wife in the Delaware Canal. It was not practical. They moved into the house for a while. He then hired a barn that had placed a pig on his friend's ranch, William Langson Lathrop at Phillips Mill, and turned it into a home and studio. The house was given a Tudor style.

Morgan then began building his "Little English Village" (which he had written on deed for his property).

The small English village of Colt consists of seven English huts with various British architectural styles. Colt built an English Gate hut connected to a large Medieval iron gate in front of his property and where all the residents of New Hope could see when they passed Phillips Mill.

Then move backwards to Colt, the small English village of Colt, building a British carriage house. In addition to Colt paintings, many of the furniture and wooden chests are in the Museum and private collections as well. and directly opposite a woodworking shop, Colt built Norman's most beautiful French-style cabin that he used as his dog cage. The entire Colt property is a work of art and must be preserved and protected.

Colt is influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement, and designs and makes wood and iron furniture using traditional techniques. He also practiced landscapes. In 1916, Colt, Lathrop, Rae Sloan Bredin, Charles Rosen, Daniel Garber, and Robert Spencer formed The New Hope Group to organize their exhibition of works. Colt added more buildings to his property in 1919 which he called the Gothic Shop, and where he showed off his furniture and metal.
