The Surgeon General of the United States Army is a senior officer of the US Army Medical Department (AMEDD). As per policy, the Surgeon General (TSG) serves as Commander General, US Army Medical Command (MEDCOM) as well as AMEDD head. The office and staff of general surgeons are known as the Surgeon General Office ( OTSG ) and are located in Falls Church, Virginia.

Since 1959, TSG has been appointed in the lieutenant-general class. By law, TSG can be appointed from one of the six branches of the AMEDD officer. However, before the 43rd Surgeon General, Lieutenant General Patricia Horoho, (a Nurse Corps officer), all the designated and confirmed general surgeons have been Medical Corps officers (military doctors). His predecessor, Surgeon General, Lt. Gen. Nadja West, was a military doctor.

History

Congress established the Continental Army Medical Service on 27 July 1775 and placed the "Chief doctor & general director" of the Continental Army as his head at the time. The first five US Army's first general surgeon is under this title. A May 28, 1789 Act established the "General Doctors" of the US Army (only Doctors Richard Allison and James Craik served according to this nomenclature). A March 3, 1813 Act quotes the US Army's "General Doctors & Surgeons". This nomenclature remained in force until the Medical Department was established by the Reorganization Act on April 14, 1818. (Doctors assigned to the US Army were not given military rank until 1847.)
