Histori
Sejarah awal
The Franciscan Sisters of the Poor, a congregation of Catholic nuns, received repeated requests from residents of various parts of Kentucky during the 1950s to open a hospital or social service center. In 1953 a group of concerned citizens approached Reverend William T. Malloy, Bishop of Covington, and sought his help in creating a new hospital called Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital (OLBH). Construction began in 1952 on a 31-hectare (13 acre) channel, 4 miles (6.4 km) from downtown Ashland, Ky. At that time, the channel can only be accessed by a small dirt road.
The official dedication of the hospital took place on July 14, 1953 and included the reading of a cable from Pope Pius XII. It says, "Our Holy Father is very grateful, studying the upcoming appointment, Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital, Ashland, Kentucky, sending good petitions, inviting special thanks to God, a proud project, Embarking His Highness, priests, and hospital staff, Brotherhood Prayers. "
Upon opening, the hospital has 92 beds and 40 bassettes. In March 1956, the road leading to the hospital was destroyed and during the summer, a new highway, 23 US, was laid, reducing about a third of the distance from Ashland to the hospital.
Growth for years
In 1963, fund-raising projects began for expansion including additional beds for adult patients, pediatric units, and air conditioning units for additional floors. The fourth floor addition was completed in 1966 and brought the 126th hospital bed capacity with 22 child beds and 19 medical-surgical beds. In the late 1970s an emergency room began to serve patients 24 hours a day. The third floor of the hospital has been renovated and the first Intensive/Coronary Treatment Unit opened in 1979. In 1981, the expansion provided new areas for Emergency Room, Radiology, Laboratory, Physical Therapy and Respiratory Therapy. OLBH's first chemical dependency program was established December 21, 1981.
The continued expansion began in 1982 and included a new surgical unit and a seven-bed recovery area. Significant increases in capital occurred in 1986 including the opening of new rehabilitation and health centers, renal dialysis centers, 116 car parking garages and a health/mental health dependency center currently operating as the Bellefonte Behavioral Health Center.
The health/rehabilitation center called the Vitality Center (now known as the Center for Human Vitality) was opened in 1992. It features indoor tracks and rehabilitation pools along with fitness equipment. The hospital opened an additional 24 beds in 1994. This addition created an extra patient room and meeting room on each of the four floors of the hospital. The second floor features rooms designed specifically for oncology treatments.
In 1994, OLBH initiated an outreach program, opening a major medical care facility in some remote communities. The centers offer many basic services in place and are designed for non-emergency medical care. The original centers are located in South Shore, Cannonsburg, Grayson, and Flatwoods. This region is still served today through the sister organization OLBH, Bellefonte Physician Services. In addition to its original location, Bellefonte Physician Services currently operates primary care facilities in Ashland, Greenup and Ironton, Ohio. In 1995, the ground was damaged for the Same Day Surgical Center which was completed in January 1998.
Expansion in the modern era

The purchase price for Ashland Oil Petroleum Building is $ 2.8 million. 2008 is a year of great expansion in OLBH, as the hospital launched the OLBH Women's Center, a facility that includes all of the $ 1.1 million that creates a "one stop shop" for regional women. The center offers GE Full Field digital mammography, day-to-day presence of OLBH surgeons, clinical breast examination, breast ultrasound, surgical consultation, minimally invasive breast biopsy, DEXA densitometer for bone density screening, retail boutiques and women's health libraries.
