Mount Hope Cemetery in Bangor, Maine, is the second oldest cemetery in the United States. It was designed by architect Charles G. Bryant in 1834 and was built by the Bangor Horticulture Society soon after, the same year that Bangor was included as a city. Graves modeled after Mt. Auburn Cemetery (1831) in Boston, Massachusetts. Bangor at the time was a border town of boom, and much of its architecture and landscape mimicked Boston's model. This site has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Bought in July 1834, the land comprised 50 acre Lot 27, located along State Street - at a time known as County Road and then "Road to Orono" - and the Penobscot River. It does not cover all the hills of the burial center; instead, cross the hilltop and meet what will eventually become Mount Hope Avenue. The land is about 660 times 3,300 feet (200 times 1,010 m) with longer sides extending north-south along State Street. Approximately 12 hectares will be set aside for horticultural activities, and the rest of the land will be used as a grave.

This is the preferred resting spot for the 19th and early 20th century elite. The cemetery included the graves of Hannibal Hamlin, US Vice President and Member of Congress, US Senator and Maine Governor, US Senator, ten US Congressmen, two US Ambassadors, four Maine Governors, eight Civil War Generals, and many "wood barons "and local businessmen and other politicians. Actor Richard Golden and Ralph Sipperly are also buried there.
