Hamilton E. Holmes (July 8, 1941 - October 26, 1995) was an American orthopedic physician. He and Charlayne Hunter-Gault were the first two African-American students to be accepted at the University of Georgia. In addition, Holmes was the first African-American student to attend Emory University Medical School, where he earned his M.D. in 1967, later professor of orthopedics and associate dean at the school.

Holmes is a member of the fraternity Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi Honors fraternity.

Holmes died in 1995 of heart failure in Atlanta, Georgia.

Holmes was born July 8, 1941 in Atlanta, Georgia. His father, Alfred, was an Atlanta businessman and his mother, Isabella, was a teacher. His grandfather, Hamilton Mayo Holmes, was a doctor, and was one of Hamilton's influences. In his high school years, Holmes studied at Henry McNeal Turner High School, then considered one of the most prestigious high schools for African-Americans in Atlanta. He graduated in 1959 as a farewell speech.

Legacy

The native Atlanta has several landmarks named in his honor including Hamilton E. Holmes Elementary School in East Point, Georgia; Hamilton E. Holmes Drive (Highway 280) in Fulton County, Georgia; and H.E. MARTA Holmes Station in Atlanta. The first blessed Professor at the University of Georgia named after an African-American was created in his name on 11 November 1999. The University of Georgia Academic Building was named for him, along with Charlayne Hunter-Gault, as it was called Holmes/Hunter Academic Building, in 2001 Also in 2012, Emory University has dedicated a new dormitory in his honor, called Hamilton Holmes Hall.
