1 Corinthians 13 is the thirteenth chapter of the First Letter to Corinth in the New Testament of the Christian Bible. It was written by Paul the Apostle and Sosthenes in Ephesus. This chapter covers the subject of "love." In the original Greek, the word ????? agape used throughout. This translates into English as a "charity" in King James version; but the word "love" is preferred by most other translations, both earlier and later.

English translation

Versi King James Baru

1 Although I speak with the tongues of men and angels, but have no love, I am merely a symbol of a thundering gong or breeze. 2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and can understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have faith, who can move mountains, but have no love, I am nothing. 3 And though I give all that I have to the poor, and surrender my body to the fire, but have no love, I find nothing.

4 Love suffers long and well; love is not jealous; love does not parade itself, not arrogant; 5 does not behave harshly, does not seek himself, is not provoked, thinks not evil; 6 do not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoice in righteousness; 7 bear all things, believe all things, hope all things, endure all things.

8 Love never fails. But if there is any prophecy, they will fail; whether there is tongues, they will stop; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish. 9 Because we know some and we partially prophesy. 10 But when that perfect one has come, then what will some be removed.

11 When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I was understood as a child, I think as a child; but when I became a man I threw away childish things. 12 For now we see in the mirror, dark, but then face to face. Now I know some, but then I will know just as I am also known.

13 And now there is faith, hope, love, all three; but the biggest is love.

Agape

Chapter 1 Corinthians is one of many sources of definitions for the word agape when used to refer to divine love. Introducing his reverence for love in 1 Corinthians 12:31, Paul describes agape as "a better way".

"Through the glass, dark"

1 Corinthians 13:12 contains phrases ???????? ??? ???? ?? '???????? ?? ????????? ( blepomen gar meaning in esoptrou en ainigmati ), translated in 1560 Geneva Bible as "For now we see through dark glass" (without commas), words used in 1611 KJV, which add commas before "dark". This section has inspired the titles of many works, with or without commas.

Word ???????? esoptrou (genitive: nominative: ???????? esoptron ), here translated "glass", ambiguous, probably refers to a mirror or lens. Influenced by Strong Concordance, many modern translations conclude that this word specifically refers to a mirror. Examples of English translations include:

  • Now we see but the reflection is as bad as in the mirror (New International Version)
  • What we see now is like a dim picture in the mirror (Good News Bible)

Paul's use in accordance with the use of the term rabbinik ???????? ( aspaklaria ), a loan from the Latin specularia . It has the same ambiguous meaning, although Adam Clarke concludes that it is a reference to , a clean polished stone used as a lens or window. One way to maintain this ambiguity is to use a cognate English, speculum . Rabbi Judah ben Ilai (2nd century) is quoted as saying, "All prophets have visions of God when He appears through the nine speculations" while "Moses sees God through a speculum." The Babylonian Talmud states the same thing "All the prophets looked at the unflattering speculum, while Moses our teacher looked at the glowing speculum."

There are other parts of 1 Corinthians 13 that are very influential.

Verses 4-8

1 Corinthians 13, verses 4-8, and 13: "Love is patient, love is good, not jealous, not boastous, not arrogant, not rude, unselfish, irritable, no note of error, evil but rejoicing with the truth, always protecting, always believing, always hoping, always persisting, love never fails, but where there is prophecy they will stop, where there is tongues they will be stopped, where there is knowledge, passed away... And now the three remain: Faith, Hope, and Love, but the greatest is Love. "(New International Version)

This section is often read during wedding ceremonies.

This part is also used in the song "Pag-ibig" by Yeng Constantino.
