" The Night I Fall In Love â ⬠" is a song on the 2002 Pet Shop Boys album Release . The lyrics are written by Neil Tennant and the music written along with Chris Lowe.
This song depicts a homosexual encounter between a teenage boy (who tells the story) and his rap music idol after the concert. The idol is never mentioned by name, but the reference in the lyrics to Dr. Dre and homophobia in rap music make it possible to identify him as Eminem's music superstar. The most obvious reference is when musicians refer to Eminem's song "Stan":
- Then he joked "hey man,
your name is not Stan, right?
We must be together!"
Discussing the inspiration of Tennant's song says: "Eminem retains the homophobic lyrics on his album always that he does not speak as himself, he speaks as a character, and he represents homophobia in America... I think it would be very interesting to take that method and just imagine a a scene where a child meets a famous rap star backstage at his concert and is surprised to find him gay and end up sleeping with him just to present rap in this homosexual context.I mean, there's obviously a gay rap star. "
Eminem responded to the song in the song "Canibitch", where Eminem and Dr. Dre ran on Pet Shop Boys with their car:
