Service and special care

NOHC is the first country hospital dedicated exclusively to the diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of neurologic and orthopedic patients. From October 2006 to September 2007, NOHC performed more than 1,100 cases of neurosurgery, 910 orthopedic cases and 1650 pain procedures. NOHC doctors took part in a study that led to new treatment options for challenging conditions. They are among the first in the country to use technology that later became the standard of care: guided imaging in spine surgery, artificial grafts grown, stents and coils inserted designed to keep blood vessels open, and use of Gamma Knives to destroy tumors. They developed new knee and hip replacement options that allow patients to continue their active lifestyle.

Offered at NOHC, BIRMINGHAM The hip coating is a relatively new procedure approved by the FDA in 2006. It is a minimally invasive alternative to total hip replacement that retains the top of the femur with a metal ball. Dr. Mitchell Sheinkop, director of joint replacement program, has performed this procedure on former MLB player Albert Belle and former NFL quarterback Jim Miller. He is also the first orthopedic surgeon in Chicago to be trained in the use of a knee reshap procedure called "The Journey Deuce."
