Histori

Over the years, the route was called Old York Road, as it was the main route from Philadelphia to New York City. Initially, the Bridge Center-Stockton Bridge is a closed toll bridge of wooden construction located in the former location of Reading's Ferry. The first was built in 1814 as a closed bridge with six spans and a total length of 821 feet built under contract by Captain Pelig Kingsley and Benjamin Lord. The construction was broken and the contractors got $ 1,200. One of the docks soon gave way and had to be rebuilt In 1830, the entire bridge was reconstructed by contractor Amos Campbell, father of Henry Roe Campbell. At that time the Raritan feeder was on the New Jersey side, and the Delaware Division channel on the Pennsylvania side had not been dug. Initially, the canal companies built and maintained bridges over their respective trenches The flood of January 8, 1841, was carried by three spans, two docks and stone houses all on the New Jersey side. It's just one of many bridges between Easton, Pennsylvania and Trenton, New Jersey, that are destroyed in the flood. However, the Bridge-Stockton Center Bridge was rebuilt well enough to be one of several bridges not immersed by the October 10, 1903 flood.

In 1923, the bridge was twice destroyed by fire and then on July 22, 1923, lightning struck the bridge and the resulting fire completely destroyed the structure.

For two years after the disaster, the Bridge-Stockton Bridge Center saw no improvement. Finally, the Delaware Delaware Combined Toll Bridge Commission controls the remains of the bridge, and begins rebuilding on the same pier and buffer where the first bridge stands. Built higher than before, it escaped damage in the 1955 floods, which destroyed many other bridges along the Delaware River. The truss steel bridge is currently completed in 1926 and opened for traffic in 1927.

In September 2006, the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission gave Road-Con a $ 8.4 million contract for Bridge Bridge-Stockton Center rehabilitation. For five months, the bridge is closed from 6 am to 5 pm. Monday to Friday, remains open only on weekends. The work carried out on the bridge includes cleaning spray and painting bridges, rehabilitating road and sidewalk decks, making structural improvements, and improving road signs, fences and lighting. As of mid-May, the total project cost is estimated at $ 9.4 million.

Bridges in art and music

The 1923 fire was described in a famous painting by Edward Willis Redfield who in 1898 had bought and lived on a farm north of the bridge.

New Jersey composer Frances White has written two compositions about the bridge: Center Bridge (1999) and Center Bridge (2001). Both were inspired by the sound of traffic in the metal grille, and both featured footage of bridges and rivers.
