The Beckman City Hope Research Institute (BRI) is a non-profit medical research facility located in and partnered with the National Hope Town Medical Center in Duarte, CA, USA. It is dedicated to studying normal and abnormal biological processes that may be associated with cancer, diabetes, HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening diseases. Basic and clinical research is done in collaboration with the National Hope Town Medical Center. The institution itself is organized into more than a dozen departments and divisions. In 2013, the director is Steven T. Rosen. Beckman Research Institute also hosts Irell & amp; Manella Graduate School of Biological Sciences who accompanied his dean was Arthur Riggs.

Histori
City of Hope was founded by the Jewish Consumptive Relief Association as a tuberculosis sanatorium, Sanatorium Los Angeles, in 1913. As tuberculosis was increasingly controlled by antibiotic use, executive director Samuel H. Golter proposed that the institution develop into a national medical. the center of studying other diseases. The City of Hope Cancer Research Institute was dedicated in 1952. Since then, the scope of research has continued to grow, with cancer and diabetes as the main focus, as well as other life-threatening illnesses. In 1983, a major $ 10 million challenge grant from Arnold and the Mabel Beckman Foundation enabled the City of Hope research division to expand significantly and formally create the Beckman Research Institute. Funds are available for buildings, equipment, and donations, but should support research and advancement of knowledge related to "the causes, prevention and cure of human diseases." Beckman Research Institute at City of Hope is the first of five Beckman research institutes to receive funding in the United States.

Contribution of research
The research and treatment are closely coordinated between the National Hope City Medical Center and the Beckman Research Institute. In 2006, over 300 clinical trials were performed at one time, and at least one-third of eligible patients were enrolled in clinical trials. A number of significant achievements have been reported by researchers affiliated with the Beckman Research Institute at City of Hope. These include:
Diabetes
Researchers associated with the Beckman Research Institute are credited with starting the biotech industry. Keiichi Itakura and Arthur Riggs, along with Genentech scientist Herbert Boyer, were the first to develop human recombin gene products. Their technique was used to successfully create synthetic somatostatin in E. coli, the first expression of human proteins in bacteria, in 1977. Techniques and genetic synthesis tools can be standardized and apply to many similar problems. The group successfully reported the expression of human insulin in bacteria in 1978.
Barry Forman identifies steroid hormones as new as first in 30 years, androstanol, a hormone with mechanisms of action different from others, which may be useful in the treatment of diabetes.
Fouad Kandeel leads clinical trials testing the use of islet transplants to treat patients who are paralyzed by type 1 diabetes is severe.
Cancer
Arthur Riggs went on to work with Shmuel Cabilly on "the fundamental technology necessary for synthetic synthesis of antibody molecules", as it is used to make "smart" cancer drugs. Riggs has been associated with the institute in several ways, including as a directory of the Beckman Research Institute from 2000-2007, now director of emeritus.
Gerd Pfeifer is able to prove the definitive relationship between smoking and lung cancer, by showing genetic damage to lung cells, caused by chemicals in cigarette smoke.
The Beckman Research Institute has partnered with Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation at Health of Women Study (HOW), a long-term cohort study that tracks women's health through online and mobile platforms. It will study women who have and who do not have breast cancer. Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation hopes to recruit a million volunteer women to be part of the participating "Women's Army".
Hua Eleanor Yu and his group are studying STAT3 involvement with cancer cells and the immune system, and developing possible drug treatments to attack tumor cells.
HIV/AIDS
John Rossi has worked on treatments for AIDS-related lymphoma, pancreatic cancer and liver cancer. He is the first researcher to use RNA to block the development of viruses that cause HIV/Aids by lowering the HIV virus inside the infected cells. He is engaged in ongoing work with David DiGiusto and others to develop a disease-resistant immune system by transplanting HIV-modified stem cells and progenitors. With John Zaia and others, Rossi has worked on Lentiviral vectors to provide RNA-based gene therapy. This approach combines stem cell and gene therapy to produce RNA molecules that can block the genes that HIV/AIDS viruses use to infect immune cells. John Zaia also investigated the possibility that cancer chemotherapy could disrupt the HIV reservoir, which has relevance to therapeutic interventions to cure HIV.
Recognition
In December 2011, Charity Watch ranked the Beckman Research Institute of City of Hope as an "A-" charity.
