Histori

Alvin Ailey and a group of young modern dancers Black first appeared in New York 92nd Street Young Men's Hebrew Association (92nd Street Y), under the name Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater (AAADT), in March 1958. At this point, Alvin Ailey was the director company, choreographer, and main dancer. The company started as an ensemble of only seven dancers, plus their choreographers, and many guest choreographers. After their first appearance, including Alvin Ailey, Blues Suite , the company traveled with what is known as "station wagon tours"; in 1960, AAADT became the company where Clark's YWCA Center of Performing Arts at 51st Street. During this period Ailey made his famous choreography of Revelations, a character dance performed for traditional music. In 1962, Ailey turned his black dance company into a multi-racial group, believing that there was a kind of upside-down chauvinism to anything black. In the same year, the company was selected for tours to the Far East, Southeast Asia and Australia as part of President John F. Kennedy's Special Presidential Special Program for Cultural Presentation. AAADT was the first "Black" company to travel for the Kennedy program. Judith Jamison, a company star for 15 years, joined the company in 1965.

Ailey founded the school in 1969, the same year when the company moved to the Brooklyn Music Academy. Companies and schools were transferred to 229 East 59th Street in Manhattan a year later, to a renovated church building. In April of that year, the financial crisis caused Ailey to issue a statement that the dissolution of the company was possible. The crisis subsided, however, and in 1971 AAADT made its first appearance in New York City Center, where it is currently a resident company. Artistic Director Associate Masazumi Chaya joined the company in 1972.

AAADT, Alvin Ailey Repertory Ensemble (later renamed Ailey II) and Ailey School relocated in 1980 into four new studios in a building on Broadway. The company celebrated its 25th anniversary three years later. Alvin Ailey died on December 1, 1989; before his death he chose Judith Jamison to succeed him as an artistic director, and the entire Ailey organization moved to 211 West 61st Street on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Ailey School and Fordham College at Lincoln Center (FCLC), Fordham University, have been affiliated to offer a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree program. [1]

Many art organizations have been subjected to pressure over the death of their founding artistic director. Many people have contributed to the success of AAADT, but the work of Michael Kaiser, executive director from 1990 to 1993, is often cited as a successful nonprofit performing arts management model.

Following tours in Russia, France and Cuba in the 1990s, as well as a residency in South Africa in 1997, Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation announced in 2001 that a new dance complex would be developed. Broken ground on building site in Manhattan the following year. Companies and schools moved into the building, named Joan Weill Center for Dance, in 2004. The company toured Russia and the UK the following year.

In 2007, AAADT was among 530 art agencies and social services New York City to receive part of a $ 20 million grant from Carnegie Corporation, made possible through donations by New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Performances and treasures

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater has been performed for approximately 23 million people in 48 states, as well as 71 countries on six continents. Among these performances included two South African residencies. Companies often become ambassadors for American culture, starting with the Southeast Asian tour program of President John F. Kennedy. The group toured Southeast Asia and Australia in 1962, and performed at the International Art Festival in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1963. They performed at the first Negro Art Festival in Dakar, Senegal, in 1966. That same year, AAADT conducted at the Edinburgh Festival, earning awards for "best choreographer", and "best company". They were also awarded "best male dancers" at the International Dance Festival in Paris in 1970, the same year they toured six Soviet cities. The company and its dancers and artistic staff have been recognized as cultural ambassadors several times, such as the 2001 National Art Medal award to Judith Jamison and Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation.

Founder Alvin Ailey created over 79 dances for his company during his tenure; However, he also maintains that the company is not merely a warehouse for its choreography. Therefore AAADT has a treasury of over 200 works by over 70 choreographers, including choreographers such as Ulysses Dove, Karole Armitage, George Faison, Uri Sands, Elisa Monte, Talley Beatty, Katherine Dunham and Twyla Tharp (whose work is Golden Section , cited from his larger ballet, The Catherine Wheel , entered the AAADT treasury in 2006). The company's popularity stems from its theatrical style, extroverted dancers with a strong personality and muscular skills. But most of the AAADT pieces have not been covered for more than a few seasons, and relatively few have achieved critical acclaim. However, the company keeps Alvin Ailey's works, including Revelations (1960), Night Creature (1974) and Cry (1971), in performance sustainable. Memoria is one of Alvin Ailey's balletic pieces, with long lines and a distinctly technical style different from his usual jazz character style from swirling patters, strong, driving arm movements, great jumps, and step -step thrust. This dance was later adopted into the treasury of the Royal Danish Ballet. Cry is a three piece solo, 20 minutes made for Judith Jamison. It is meant to pay tribute to all black women, and can be seen as a journey of degradation to pride, rebellion, and survival. Cry has great physical and emotional demands on players and onlookers.

The battle has expanded the corporate treasury in significant ways, adding well-established choreographers such as Garth Fagan, Jiri Kylian, Wayne McGregor, Ohad Naharin and Paul Taylor, and commissioned new dances from contemporary choreographers including Kyle Abraham and Aszure Barton. In 2011, Battle also established a New Choreography Laboratory to cultivate new artists.
