Various cultures and folk traditions assign symbolic meaning to plants . Although this is no longer understood by populations increasingly divorced from their old rural traditions, some survive. In addition, these meanings are alluded to in older drawings, songs and writings. New symbols also appear: one of the best known in Britain is the red poppy as a warning symbol of the fall of war.
