History

Hope Air was founded in 1986 by Joan Rogers and Jinnie Bradshaw under the name Mission Air Transportation Network. In the early years, the company joined Mission Air to use their aircraft. However, soon after the launch of Mission Air attracted commercial airlines, with more than 90 percent of flights going through airline partners today.

By 1993, the organization had provided more than 10,000 flights.

In 1995, Romeo Leblanc, then Governor-General of Canada, became Viceregal's first protector of Hope Air. Every Canadian governor-general has since become a protector of charity.

In 1996, WestJet was founded and immediately donated its first flight to Hope Air. His contribution increased and WestJet was the largest airline partner of Hope Air.

In 1999, Mission Air changed its name to Hope Air. Also in 1999, Hope Air began partnering with private pilots who started flying Hope Air clients on their aircraft, as part of the Voluntary Charity Pilot Program.

In 2001, Marc Garneau became the National Honor Patron of Air Hope. He served in this role until 2015, when he resigned after being appointed Minister of Transport.

In 2006, the charity celebrated its 20th anniversary and arranged for the 50,000th flight.

In 2010, British Columbia established a partnership with Hope Air to provide flights to provincial residents who need to travel for health care. The province is strengthening its partnership with the charity by investing $ 1.5 million by 2015.

In the same year, the organization arranged more than 10,000 flights, the most in a calendar year. On December 3, 2015, Hope Air celebrates its 100,000th flight.

In 2016, Hope Air celebrates its 30th anniversary. In the same year, Hope Air partnered with the provincial government of PEI to provide the Confederate Bridge Path to the Islanders who had to travel from the island to health care. This marks the first time in its history that Hope Water provides a road trip to patients.

How Hope Water operates

Hope Air provides flights under four major flight programs: the Airline Donation Program, Flight Purchase Program, Voluntary Pilot Program and Business Aviation Registration. Charities have a mixed donor base composed of individuals, foundations, and corporations. A number of Canadian airlines provide donations in the form of seats on scheduled flights.

The Commercial Airlines Airline Donation Program is based on partnerships with various Canadian airlines that contribute seats on flights to Hope Air clients. In this case, the charity covers the tax costs and regular fees associated with airline tickets, while commercial airlines provide airline tickets.

The Aviation Purchase Program requires the purchasing seat of Hope Air on commercial flights for Hope Air clients.

The Volunteer Pilot Program partnered with private pilots using their aircraft to fly Hope Air clients to medical appointments.

Business Flight Program is the latest flight program where Hope Air operates. Through this program, the owners and operators of corporate aircraft in Canada provide aviation benefits to clients. The Business Flight Program was launched in mid-2014 after the Canadian Transport Agency determined that Hope Air was not an "aviation service" and subsequently abolished restrictions that previously restricted the charity's ability to provide flights on private aircraft

Impact of Hope Air

About 20 percent of Air Force Clients say they will not go to their appointments if Hope Air can not help them. Another 20 percent said they had to travel at least four hours - and, for some, up to eight or 12 hours - to get their promise without the help of Hope Air. Amal estimates that for everyone it helps, it positively impacts 45 others in their community.
