Ernesto Contreras (1915-2003) served as a Mexican doctor. He operated Oasis of Hope Hospital in Tijuana for more than 30 years, claiming to "treat" cancer patients with amygdalin (also called "laetrile" or, incorrectly, "vitamin B 17 ") that has been found not at all effective. Its practices have been widely condemned.

Contreras received post-graduate training at Boston Children's Hospital in Boston. He serves as the chief pathologist at the Army Hospital in Mexico City and Professor of Histology and Pathology at the Mexican Army School of Medicine.

Controversial cancer treatment

About the case of extreme terminal cancer, Contreras accused: "Palliative action [laetrile ability to improve patient comfort] is about 60% of the cases.Often, quite significantly, I see disease retention or even regression in about 15% of highly sophisticated cases." There is no evidence to support Contreras' statement.

Many Contreras patients come from the United States, where the use of laetrile is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Since the 1970s, the use of Laetrile to treat cancer has been described in scientific literature as a canonical example of shamanism and has never been proven effective in the treatment or prevention of cancer.
