Derek Sherrard "D. J." Hayden, Jr. (born June 27, 1990) is an American football cornerback for the Jacksonville Jaguars of the National Football League (NFL). He plays college football for the University of Houston and is drafted by Oakland Raiders 12 overall in the NFL Draft 2013. Hayden also plays for the Detroit Lions.

College career

In 2009, Hayden played 10 matches as a freshman at Navarro College and recorded 23 tackles and one for loss. In his second year, he helped lead Navarro College, NJCAA National Football Championship 2nd in the 2010 season. Throughout the year, he played in all 11 games and recorded 33 solo tackles. Out of Houston, Hayden is the first or second election projected by the majority of experts and NFL draft analysts. He accepted an invitation to NFL Combine, but was unable to perform physical exercise as it recovered from its operation. Oakland Raiders

Oakland Raiders chose Hayden in the first round (overall 12) from the NFL Draft 2013. He is the second cornerback taken after Dee Milliner. Hayden was the highest-choice defender from Houston since Wilson Whitley in 1977. 2013

2014

On August 26, 2014, Oakland Raiders put Hayden on the Physically Unprecedented list for the first six games of the season with recurring toe injuries.

On October 26, 2014, Hayden made his season debut during a 13-23 loss to the Cleveland Browns. The following week, he made seven combined tackles and deflections pass in 24-30 losses to the Seattle Seahawks. On Sunday 10th, Hayden started his first season and finished the match with three single tackles and three deflections, and intercepted Denver Broncos defender Peyton Manning, losing 17-41. 2015

Throughout the training camp in 2015, Hayden competed with T. J. Carrie, Keith McGill, and James Dockery for the initial cornerback position. The new head coach of Oakland Raiders, Jack Del Rio, named Hayden the starting corner, along with T. J. Carrie, to start the regular season.

Hayden started the opening loss of the Raiders season to the Cincinnati Bengals and collected four combined tackles. On October 25, 2015, he recorded ten single tackles, deflected the pass, and intercepted San Diego Chargers midfielder Philip Rivers in a 37-29 victory. The following week, he collected three combined tackles, deflected the operand, and fired Geno Smith for the first sack of his career in a 34-20 win over the New York Jets. On Sunday 9th, Hayden made 13 tackles of high career careers as the Raiders lost to Pittsburgh Steelers, 35-38. He finished the season with 70 high-career tackles (64 solos), eight deflections passed, sacks, and interception in 16 games and 13 starts.

On May 2, 2016, Oakland Raiders announced that it would not take Hayden's fifth option on his rookie contract.

Hayden competes with Sean Smith, David Amerson, and T. J. Carrie for the initial cornerback position. He was named the fourth cornerback on the Raider's depth chart behind Smith, Amerson, and Carrie.

On October 2, 2016, he recorded six highest tackles this season and went through a deflection during a 28-27 win over the Baltimore Ravens. On Sunday 7th, he collected five high-tack single-season seasons and made two leap passes during the victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. On November 6, 2016, Hayden started his first season and recorded two tackles and a track deflection, as the Raiders defeated the Denver Broncos 30-20. He finished his final year in Oakland with 37 combined tackles (32 solos) and six jump leaps in 11 matches and two starts.

On December 3, 2016, Hayden was placed in an injured reserve with a hamstring injury.

Detroit Lions

On March 10, 2017, the Detroit Lions signed Hayden for a one-year contract, $ 3.75 million on bail of $ 2.25 million and a $ 1 million signing bonus.
