Histori

Harvard is the third oldest medical school in the United States (after the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons) and was founded by John Warren on September 19, 1782, with Benjamin Waterhouse and Aaron. Dexter, "professor of chemistry and materia medica (pharmacology)."

The first lecture was held in the basement of Harvard Hall, then at Holden Chapel. Students do not pay tuition, but buy tickets for five or six lectures every day. The first two students graduated in 1788.

In 1810 the school moved to Boston - first to where it is now downtown Washington Street; then Mason Street (1816-1846, during which time it is sometimes referred to as Massachusetts Medical College); North Grove Street (1847); Copley Square (1883); and finally its present location (Longwood Medical Area) in 1906. On the Longwood campus there are five original marble-faced buildings, used for laboratories, amphitheaters, and research rooms.

When Charles William Eliot became president of Harvard in 1869, he found medical school in the worst condition in every part of the university; its reform laid the foundation for transformation into one of the world's leading medical schools.

Innovation

The Harvard Medical School Faculty has been associated with a number of important medical and public health innovations:

Female

In mid-1847, Professor Walter Channing's proposal that women be accepted for lectures and exams was rejected by the Presidents and Fellows of Harvard College. Nevertheless, Harriot Kezia Hunt soon after giving permission to attend medical school, but in 1850 this permission was withdrawn.

In 1866 two women with extensive medical education elsewhere applied but were refused entry. In 1867 the voice of a single faculty member blocked Susan Dimock's acceptance. In 1872, Harvard rejected the $ 10,000 prize conditioned in a medical school that received female medical students in the same terms as men. A similar offer of $ 50,000, by a group of ten women including Marie Elizabeth Zakrzewska, was rejected in 1882, a committee of five people was appointed to study the issue. After medical school moved from North Grove Street to Boylston Street in 1883, Professor Henry Ingersoll Bowditch's proposal that North Grove Street's location be used for medical education for women was denied.

In 1943, the dean's committee recommended the acceptance of women, the proportion of men and women dependent entirely on the qualifications of the applicants. In 1945, the first class of women was accepted; projected benefits include helping male students learn to see women as equal, increasing the number of doctors in low-cost specializations normally avoided by men, and replacing the weakest thirds of all male classes with better-qualified women. In 1972 about one-fifth of Harvard's medical students were female.

African-American

In 1850 two black men, Daniel Laing, Jr. and Isaac H. Snowden, were accepted at school, but they were subsequently issued under pressure from faculty, and other students, who objected.

In 1968, in response to a petition signed by hundreds of medical students, the faculty formed a commission on relationships with the black community in Boston; at that time less than one percent of Harvard medical students were black. In 1973, the number of black students claimed to have tripled, and in the following year, the number was fourfold.

Curriculum and student life

At the beginning of the 20th century, the "block system", in which "each subject is treated intensively for one period and then down altogether", is omitted. In addition to the purpose of testing knowledge over memory, time is reduced.

By 2015, Harvard introduces a new "Pathways" curriculum, aimed at "cultivating active learning and critical thinking, early clinical experience, and experience of basic science/clinical populations and tailored students that will provide a special pathway for each student."

The Harvard-MIT Health and Technology Division (HST) offers an alternative MD program with a stronger emphasis on biomedical research. The MD HST program is significantly smaller than the Pathways program, receiving only 30 applicants each year.

Although the curriculum is demanding, HMS students are actively involved in dozens of student organizations at Harvard. Traditionally, HMS sent one or more first year students as delegates to the Harvard Graduate Council (HGC), a university-level university government. Participation in HGC is part of an effort to bridge the physical, social and cultural differences that exist among the various Harvard graduate schools, which are particularly relevant given the physical separation of the School of Medicine from Cambridge's main Harvard campus.

Mitra Harvard Medical International

Harvard Medical School (HMS) has a medical consultancy arm, Harvard Medical International Partners (PHMI). PHMI has a long-term collaborative relationship with medical faculty at Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich, Germany, Alfaisal University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and the American University of Lebanon (LAU) in Beirut, Lebanon. Other long-term relationships include PHMI's work with Asan Medical Center in Seoul, South Korea, and Tokyo Medical and Dental University in Japan. In 2007 PHMI started a 10-year collaboration with Lebanon American University; in October 2009 LAU opened a new medical school with help from PHMI.
