The Church of the Open Door was conceived by R. A. Torrey who came to Los Angeles to start a Bible institute (now known as Biola University) similar to the Moody Bible Institute. The church must be completely non-denominational, though evangelical. The goal is to achieve the missing from Los Angeles, which is reflected in the name based on two parts of Scripture: John 10: 9 and Revelation 3: 8. Other pastors include Louis T. Talbot (1932-1948) and J. Vernon McGee (1949 -1970). The pastor today is Ed Underwood.
For 70 years the church is located in downtown Los Angeles on Hope Street. It moved to Glendora, California in 1985.
The original church building was located in downtown Los Angeles and was destroyed in the late 1980s. Despite an effort led by the late William Eugene Scott to prevent the building from being sold to the developer and to keep the building as a historic building, the building could not be saved because it was severely damaged in the 1987 Whittier Narrows quake that was declared unsafe and the cost of repair was considered expensive. One of the two historic "Jesus Saving signs" of the original building can now be seen above Ace Hotel Los Angeles. It was moved there by the late William Eugene Scott who took him with him when his church (Los Angeles University Cathedral) moved after the earthquake.

Glendora
When the church moved to Glendora in 1985, he bought land from Azusa Pacific University. It's still a growing church, with about 500 worshipers every Sunday. David Anderson is currently Senior Pastor, with David Schaller serving as Associate Pastor and Ed Underwood serving as Assistant Pastor. There are two services every Sunday at 9:00 am and 11:00 am at the Worship Center, located just south of the gym. Various Sunday School classes are available, including for adults, and for children and adolescents. HUB (Home Unity Bible) groups meet weekly in local church family homes. This small group service centered on the fellowship and preacher's sermon discussions from Sunday.
