JBJ Soul Kitchen

JBJ Soul Kitchen opens in Red Bank, NJ on October 19, 2011. JJJ Soul Kitchen strives to provide healthy, organic and local food in the restaurant environment. They empower individuals by providing voluntary opportunities in return for certificates of meals for themselves and their families and by providing job training in the food industry. They allow customers to pay them to make changes in their community by paying to cover voluntary customer costs. They promise to treat all their customers with dignity and respect, while unifying the community and establishing a healthy and lasting relationship through food. In early 2016, JBJ Soul Kitchen has served over 45,000 meals and achieved their goal of having 51% of their visitors pay and 49% of their visitors in need. In 2015, JBJ Soul Kitchen was voted Best Celebrity Owned Restaurant at the Best 10Best Choice Award Reader Travel - Sponsored by USA TODAY.

JBJ Soul Kitchen runs a Team of Employment and Empowerment (EET) Program that connects professional teams with qualified volunteers to assist with resume writing, interview skills, job coaching, financial counseling and legal advice.

In January 2015, JBJ Soul Kitchen sponsored Spoon Full of Hope, a non-profit community restaurant and outreach program of Gateway Church of Christ. The pop-up location "JBJ Soul Kitchen Sponsors Spoon Full of Hope" began serving food at Union Beach at Union Hose Fire Co. # 1. JBJ Soul Foundation offers to help reopen Spoon Full of Hope after the program loses its funding in the summer of 2014. The community restaurant follows JBJ Soul Kitchen's model because there is no price on the menu and you can sit with someone you may not know. This is not a "pay-what-you-can" model, instead the customer can pay a minimum donation or one hour volunteer time to get a meal-eating certificate that will feed the volunteers and up to four family members. During the 47-week program The Hopeful Spoon serves 4,391 meals where 2,692 are the food needed.

History:

In November 2009, JBJSF partnered with St. Anthony from Padua in Red Bank, NJ to drive a "community restaurant" operating outside the church on Friday night. This project gives low-income families the opportunity to enjoy a meal with the family without the high cost of restaurant services. Visitors can make donations or volunteers in the kitchen to pay for food. JBJ Soul Kitchen started out small but quickly grew and started serving an average of 60 meals per night. Proven to be a successful model, JBJSF then found a home for their pilot program in the fall of 2010 from Lunch Break, which is also located in Red Bank, NJ. Operating once a week, they started their "Sunday Suppers" program that lasts until spring 2011.

Following a successful pilot program, the borough planning board in the Red Bank approved the conversion of used car shops into community restaurants in April 2011. JBJSF has a renovated building in time for the opening fall of 2011.
