History

On November 20, 1981, Unbound was founded by Bob Hentzen's siblings, Bud Hentzen, Jim Hentzen, Nadine Pearce and their friend Jerry Tolle. You want to start a non-profit to honor their late parents. Bob and Jerry are both missionaries who have witnessed the direct impact of poverty in developing countries, so they form a sponsoring organization based on Catholic social teaching.

Unbound's first headquarters are in Bob's basement in Kansas City, Mo. Around 1982, the foundation moved his office to a farmhouse. In 1991, Unbound turned the abandoned warehouse into an office that remains the current base.

Over the years, more than 625,000 children, teenagers and parents and their families have been served through sponsored programs. There are currently over 300,000 sponsored children and aging people. Groups without Catholic affiliations have become committed partners with Unlimited.

Bob Hentzen explains the new name "Unbound": "We walk side by side with people who dream of freeing themselves from poverty, because they are trying to achieve self-sufficiency and build a strong community." Our new name sums up our work. And current president and CEO, Scott Wasserman, agrees; rather than a group of initials what "Bob wants is a word that captures the essence of Catholic social teaching and empowers the poor."

At the death of Bob Hentzen in October 2013, at the age of 77, the National Catholic Reporter praised his work.

Program

Program Sponsorship

Unbound using direct support sponsorship model. The Hope for a Family sponsorship program aims to help families living in extreme poverty by connecting them with sponsors in the US. Sponsorships require a $ 36 monthly commitment to help fund basic needs and, in many instances, livelihood programs to help families become self-sufficient.

Sponsors have the opportunity to offer encouragement and support to their sponsored friends through the exchange of letters and photographs. They can also choose to travel on unlimited awareness trips to meet their sponsored friends, learn about their lives and see how contributions are used.

The benefits and services provided through sponsorship are personalized to suit the needs of the family and may include: meals, school uniforms, school supplies, tuition or other school fees, clothing, housing repairs, medical and dental care, livelihood initiatives, adult literacy training , Christmas and birthday celebrations and social events and help for parents.

Scholarship Program

The Unbound Scholarship Program provides educational scholarships for students pursuing high school, post-secondary and vocational schools. Scholarships are used for school fees, transportation, school supplies and books. Recipients are selected by the project based on economic needs, commitment to complete their education, demonstrating leadership potential and interest in community service. The recipient performs the service project as a program requirement.

Scholarships are intended as additional assistance, and families contribute what they can to their students' education.
