The Kansas District is one of 35 districts of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS), and consists of the state of Kansas with the exception of one congregation in Nebraska District. The Kansas District includes about 162 trials and missions, divided into 14 circuits, as well as 48 kindergartens and 15 elementary schools. Membership was baptized in the district court of approximately 55,800.
The Kansas District was formed in 1888 from the Western District, and at various times including territories in Colorado, Oklahoma and New Mexico; parts of the district were separated into the District of Colorado (later renamed the Rocky District) and the Oklahoma District in 1921 and 1924, and the New Mexico region was later transferred to the Colorado District in 1941-42. The Kansas District Office is located in Topeka, Kansas. Delegates from each session meet at a convention every three years to elect the district president, four vice presidents, regional visitors, boards of directors, and other officials. Reverend Peter K. Lange is the current President of the District, as of June 2015.
