Daniel Gillies (born March 14, 1976) is a New Zealand actor. He is best known for his role as Elijah Mikaelson on The Vampire Diaries and The Originals spin-offs, as well as Dr. Joel Goran in the Canadian series Saving Expectations , a medical themed show with mystical and paranormal touches. He wrote and directed the 2012 movie Broken Kingdom .

Gillies was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada to New Zealand's parents. When he was five years old, his parents decided to return to their native New Zealand, and moved to Invercargill and then to Hamilton. Having decided that his original acting options in New Zealand are limited, Gillies explores options in Sydney and Canada. Gillies then moved to Los Angeles and soon played a role in the film Bride and Prejudice and Spider-Man 2 .
Since 2002, Gillies has worked on Canadian and American film and television - at the same time. Gillies married American actress Rachael Leigh Cook on August 8, 2004, after less than a year of dating. Together, they have a daughter born in 2013 and a son born in 2015. In an interview in 2017, he revealed that he took medical steps to prevent a third child from being taken to the family by citing concerns about age and energy level, ".." No, that's the answer.
