History
URM was founded by Lyman Stewart, founder of Union Oil Company and Biola University, as a Christian missionary outreach. Originally called the Pacific Gospel Union, and sponsored a revival meeting in the tents. Only in 1903 the organization bought a permanent home. In 1926, the City of Los Angeles bought their property to build Los Angeles City Hall, so URM moved into a new building which was later called "Mission on Main Street". In the 1940s managed by George Hummel.
In 1955, Helga Bender Henry, wife of Carl F.H. Henry, wrote the history of the country's hundred-year largest rescue mission. Henry reports that URM has served 328,822 meals in 1953. In the previous 20 years, Mission has served over 5 million meals. At that time, Clinton Goodwin, who had a famous story, was the home manager. Another adviser of the record is FW Demara, the Great Imposter.
In 1994, URM moved into a new facility worth $ 29 million, 5 floors, 225,000 square feet (20,900 m 2 ). New shelters include computer-based learning centers, libraries, children's playgrounds and study areas, and gymnasiums. The new facility is located at San Pedro 545 S. Street, Los Angeles, 90013. Today, the Mission feeds thousands of times a day to the needy and homeless in the city center. The guest chapel offers a place to rest. The new building has a Main Chapel with church services and Sunday services at 1 pm.
In 2007, the Union Rescue Mission opened Hope Gardens, a facility outside Skid Row that is specifically for women and children.
