"My Hope Built On Nothing Less" is a Christian song written by Edward Mote, a pastor at Rehoboth Baptist Church in Horsham, West Sussex. Mote wrote about 100 hymns, this one, written in 1834, being the most famous.
The song "My Hope Built Above Absence" was published anonymously in several collections of praise before it was first associated with Edward Mote in a collection of about 100 of his hymns published in 1837 under the title Hymns, New Hymns Gospel Options, All Your Highness from Our Spiritual Poetry, with Many Originals . The original title of Mote is "Basic Not Changed for Sinner's Expectations" in this collection.
The Repetition of "My Hope Built on Absence" refers to the Parable of the Wise and the Fool Builders and builds around the metaphor of Christ as a rock with a solid foundation in the Bible (1 Corinthians 10: 4).
In Christ the Solid Rock I stand All other land drowned in sand
"My Expectations Built Above Nothing" is part of the Gospel hymn genre. The first verse expresses God's grace, stanzas 2 and 3 relate to the application of that gift in difficult times. In the last verse, Mote brings her hymn circle full of the ultimate realization of God's grace.
The lyrics vary somewhat among the various songbooks, but usually the phraseology embraces the original Mote.
The song became very popular and has been the subject of many interpretations and coverage.

Alternate tone
"My Expectations Built Above Nothing" has been the basis of other praise songs such as " Solid Rock " which uses the same repetition. The SOLID ROCK tone in which Mote's words were most often composed by William B. Bradbury in 1863.
Time and again, both "My Expectations Built Above Nothing Less" and the song "Solid Rock" are sung together as a medley. "Solid Rock" has also been sung as a medley with "In Christ Alone" written by Keith Getty and Stuart Townend.
Desperation Band released the same song titled "Solid Rock" on their 2009 album Light Up the World . But the track is a completely different song (both in lyrics and music) using the phrase "On this rock solid Christ I hold/All other land is drowned sand" on the bridge of music (or breakstrain).
Hillsong Music was released in 2012 the song of worship as the title song for Cornerstone , which uses the lyrics "My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less" but with different refrain and melody.
"Melita"
An alternative song sometimes used for "My Hope Built on the Unseen" is MELITA, composed by John B. Dykes. The advantage of MELITA for "My Expectations Built on Limitations" is that MELITA automatically emphasizes the word rock (which is the center of the lyrics) by dedicating one and a half taps to the word (where SOLID ROCK is only has an eighth note). The disadvantage of MELITA is that it can not be separated from the hymn of "Eternal Father, Strong to Saving" (commonly recognized in the United States as "The Navy's Appeal").
