Akua Lezli Hope is an African-American artist, poet and writer. New Yorker third generation, he was born in Manhattan and grew up in the South Bronx and Queens. He has degrees from Williams College and Columbia University in psychology, journalism, and business. Akua is a talented woman with diverse interests including music. He also sings and plays saxophone.

He has twice won Artist Friendship from the New York Foundation for the Arts (1987, 2003). His expertise is handmade paper making and crochet design. He has published over 125 crochet patterns and is a fan of free form crochet. Akua Lezli Hope also created sculptures, objects and jewelery in glass, paper and fiber. In the glass he blends, throws and flameworks.

The collection, Embouchure, Poetry on Jazz and Other Musics, was published by ArtFarm Press in 1995. It won the Writer's Digest Award book poetry award 1995 . His work has appeared in numerous literary magazines and in several anthologies, including:
- Sisterfire , a fictional anthology and Black Womanist (HarperPerennial) poem
- Erotique Noire/Black Erotica (Doubleday/Anchor)
- Confirm , an anthology of African-American female writers (Quill/Morrow).
He is a founding member of the Black Writers Union and the New Renaissance Writers Guild. He is the Area Coordinator for Amnesty International.
Writer
Hope won a Creative Writing Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts and Ragdale U. S. - Africa Fellowship. She has provided more than 100 readings for spectators at colleges, prisons, parks, museums, restaurants and bars. He is a founding member of the Black Writers Union and his New Renaissance Writers Guild whose alums include Baron James Ashanti, Doris Jean Austin, Arthur Flowers and Terry McMillan ( Waiting for Exhaling , How Stella Got Back Ground i>).
A lifelong science fiction enthusiast, his poetry sf was published in Asimov's science fiction magazine, and many others. The story, The Becoming is included in the Dark Matter: The Anthology of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Speculative Fiction by Black Writers - named the famous New York Times book, as it is the first anthology of science fiction and fantasy by Black Writers.
Akua is the Area Coordinator for Amnesty International USA in the South Tier of New York and also serves on the Amnesty Cultural Diversity Resource Group. She serves as a staff member of the African American Resource Forum and is Chairman of the Section Book and Author's Section at the African American Cultural Forum and the African American Verses section of the Poetry Forum on Compuserve Information Services.

In 2005 he suffered from transverse myelitis, a rare idiopathic autoimmune disease, and became paralyzed.
