Controversies

Completely unprepared for disasters: the hospitals in Chennai -- private as well as government -- were particularly vulnerable, improvising solutions as the situation developed. At least 13 primary health centres in Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts were affected. But the worst affected was MIOT International, where 18 patients on ventilator support died on 2 and 3 December, as per the Health Secretary's press release. Government gives clean chit to MIOT Hospitals. A PIL filed against MIOT Hospital, alleging an encroached plot and that it had built an illegal culvert, has been closed by the Madras high court without any orders. The Court observed that MIOT Hospitals has taken all requisite permission for construction and the building is in conformity with regulations and there has been no violation. The court declared that the petitioner's "allegations are based on surmises and conjectures."
