Hope College is a Christian liberal arts college in the Netherlands, Michigan. Opened in 1851 as a Pioneer School by Dutch immigrants four years after the community was first settled. The first class of freshmen was accepted in 1862 and Hope received his country charter in 1866. Hope College affiliated with the Reformed Church in America and maintained a lively Christian atmosphere. Campus 125 acre (0.195Ã, sqÃ, mi) This school is adjacent to the downtown commercial district and has been divided by Western Theological Seminary since 1884.

Histori
The motto of hope is taken from Psalm 42: 5: "Spera in Deo" ("Hope in God"). The coat of arms is an anchor. This was taken from a speech by Albertus van Raalte, community leader, on the occasion of the establishment of Pioneer School in 1851: "This is the anchor of my hope for these people in the future," (a reference to Hebrews 6:19). The elementary Pioneer School was later expanded to secondary school, and soon afterwards, college level education as Hope College. Van Vleck Hall, originally housed in Pioneer School, is the oldest building on campus (1858) and now serves as a dormitory. This is the second oldest building in town. The first class of freshmen was accepted in 1862, and Hope received his country's charter in 1866. The college recognized its first female student in 1878.
2015 marks the 150th year of Hope College's education. To honor this celebration, Hope College holds many events throughout 2015. The celebration begins with the 150th start on May 3, 2015. This year will be held two grand opening, Kruizenga Art Museum and Jack H. Miller Center for Musical Arts, and stone laying ceremony first Jim and Martie Bultman Student Center. It also sponsors the Colokium Presidential lecture series featuring David Brooks speech about Christian education in the 21st century.

Academics
The college offers 90 majors, all of which lead to a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Music, a Bachelor of Science, a Bachelor of Science in Engineering, or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. It has a student population of approximately 3,400 with a student-to-faculty ratio of 12: 1. The campus offers off-campus study programs in several US cities, including Philadelphia, Washington, DC, and Chicago, and overseas programs for summer, semester, or one academic year. Among its international programs, the long summer semester in Vienna is quite popular among students.
The hope of maintaining a strong relationship with the American Reformed Church and striving to educate students in the historic Christian faith while maintaining a rigorous academic education.
In addition, Hope College is a member of the Great Lakes Colleges Association.
The courses offered in Hope are divided into five disciplines.
General Education
While taking a course in Public Education in Harapan, students face a variety of topics rooted in liberal arts education. Regardless of its majors, students take courses in art, history, language, literature, mathematics, and science. Students also participate in First Year Seminar courses and Senior Seminar courses. These courses are developed to help transition students in and out of their college careers.
Art and Humanity
The Fine and Performing Arts degree at Hope College consists of four departments, which include Art and History of Art, Dance, Music, and Theater. Humanities Division includes English department, History, Modern and Classical Language, Philosophy and Religion. The Arts Division at Hope College seeks to "educate every student and community in the transformational power of art." Hope College is the first private liberal arts college to have national accreditation in art, dance, music and theater.
Natural and Applied Science
The Applied and Natural Sciences program at Hope College includes Biology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Geology and Environmental Science, Mathematics, Neuroscience, Nursing and Physics. Many of these departments offer research positions for students in the summer and also provide summer camps for elementary to secondary school students.
Social Science
The degree of Social Sciences at Hope College comprises the departments of Communication, Economics and Business, Education, Kinesiology, Peace and Justice, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology/Social Work.
Pre-health program
There are a variety of pre-health programs offered by Hope at the undergraduate level. These programs include Chiropractic Medicine, Dentistry, Genetic Counseling, Medicine, Occupational Therapy, Optometry, Pharmacy, Physician Assistant, Physical Therapy, Podiatry, Public Health, Speech Language Pathology and Veterinary Medicine. Other pre-health professions include Nursing, Athletic Training, and Preclinical Psychology.

Campus life
Real Estate
Campus housing is provided in 11 dormitories, 15 apartment buildings, and 70 homes (called "cottages") owned by campuses near the campus. A small number of students - mainly juniors, seniors, and Dutch residents - live off campus. All full-time students without commuting status are required to stay on campus housing for three years.
Demographics
The majority of Hope students come from the greater Great Lakes region - by 2012 about 90% of the student body comes from the states of Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, New York, Ohio, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. [6] About 86% of the student body is white, students from minority backgrounds account for about 12% of the student body. Approximately 2% of student body is international.
Student organization
Student activities and organizations include Dance Marathon and Relay for Life, FM radio stations (WTHS-FM 89.9), newspapers (The Anchor), literary magazines (Opus) and Milestone, plus various academic, musical, spiritual, literary, social and athletic clubs where students can choose to participate. Approximately 10-12% of students belong to a social fraternity and student association, which is local to Hope rather than chapters of a larger organization, with the exception of one fraternity (Phi Sigma Kappa). The college hosts Sunday night services ("The Gathering") and Monday/Wednesday/Friday Chapel services on campus. Attendance at this event has been voluntary since 1970, but students regularly fill the Dimnent Memorial Chapel with a capacity of over 1,000 students in each service.
Campus tradition
The Pull
"The Pull" is an annual war attraction between new and second graders at Hope College. The Pull takes place across the Black River in Holland, Michigan, and now takes place on the last Saturday of September each year (Before 1993 held on Friday). The Pull dates back to 1898. During Tarik, each team had 18 students on the ropes as "towing," and 18 others acting as moral guides and amplifiers, or "morals." New students are trained by junior class, and second year by senior. This arrangement has led to competition between even and odd year classes. The color of the year is red and white, while the third year color is maroon and gold. Competition is now limited to three hours; However, previously there was no time limit. Winners are determined by the size of which team takes the most ropes.
Nykerk Cup Competition
The Nykerk Cup is a multi-faceted competition between new students and second year students that involve songs, games, and speeches. Just like Pull, freshmen trained by juniors and sophomores by seniors, also contribute to "Odd Year" and "Even Year" competitions. The Nykerk Cup lasts for Family Weekend in late fall. The tradition began in 1935 by John Nykerk. Men participate in the competition as "moral" by supporting all female participants while building sets and coordinating scene changes for the competition.
Winter Fantasia
A formal dance was offered by the campus in February. Students can attend in large groups or by date, and the college offers transportation to Grand Rapids, where the dance takes place.
Tari Maraton
Hope College students hold an annual Dance Marathon to raise money for Helen Devos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids. This event takes place in the spring semester. Students volunteer to become dancers or fight for the event. Dancers stand on their feet and dance for 24 hours while the moral shifts to support the dancers throughout the day and night. The hospital children often make visits to show their gratitude and support the dancers.
Vesper Natal
Every December, Hope College hosts a musical Christmas celebration at Dimnent Chapel. The service, which has been held annually since 1941 has more than 200 students, staff and faculty. The program includes music performed by the Chapel Choir, Chorus College, Orchestra, and other small ensembles. There are four performances each year, and the four draw a crowd that filled the big chapel. The show is regularly recorded and broadcast on PBS stations during the Christmas season.
Campus events
Hopes routinely host famous writers, speakers, scientists, and global leaders who give lectures on a wide variety of topics.
Writer Series Jack Ridl Visiting presents leading authors for free public reading. The series is named in honor of poet and professor Harapan Emeritus University Jack Ridl, who founded the tradition in 1982.
Jobs
For 11 consecutive years (2006-2016), Hope College has been listed among the "101 best and brightest companies to work in West Michigan" Michigan Business and Professionals Association survey.
Campus Remodeling
Universities marked the completion of the "Great Hope" campaign in October 2015 with dedication from Jack H. Miller Center for Music Art. In September 2015, colleges dedicated the opening of the Kruizenga Art Museum, designed by C Concept Design, and broke up the development of Jim and Martie Bultman Education Center.
Until October 2015, Jack H. Miller Music Arts Center and Kruizenga Art Museum are currently open and used by students and faculty. Jim's Student Center and Martie Bultman opened for the 2017-2018 school year.
Athletics
Hope College competes in the MIAA conference, and is a member of the Third Division of the NCAA. There are currently 20 male and female university teams. The campus has built several new outdoor athletes in recent years - DeVos Fieldhouse (2005), Boeve Baseball Stadium (2008), Wolters Softball Stadium (2008), Van Andel Soccer Stadium (2009) and Heeringa-Vande Poel Tennis Stadium 2012)). The campus recently acquired Holland Municipal Stadium from the City of Holland and has named it Ray and Sue Smith in honor of the old coach and his wife. In 2006, the women's basketball team won the National Championships in the division, the second in school history.
Hope has won the MIAA All-Sports/Commissioner's Cup Championship more than any other member school. Hope has won the league honors who lead 34 times. In 2012-13, athletes and/or Hope teams qualify nine NCAA championships.
School athletics teams are called Flying Dutchmen (men) and Flying Dutch (women). The colors of the school are blue and orange (probably chosen because the Dutch royal family is the House of Orange-Nassau). Colleges sponsor ice hockey and rugby clubs in addition to popular intramural sports programs.
