The Summit Bechtel Reserve (SBR), located in Fayette and Raleigh County, near Beckley, West Virginia, is one of the four facilities managed by the National Council of Boy Scouts of America (BSA). The Summit Bechtel Reserve is the current home of the National Scout Jamboree, National High Adventure Base Paul R. Christen, James C. Justice National Scout Camp, and John D. Tickle National Training and Leadership Center. This reserve consists of properties totaling over 14,000 hectares (57 km 2 ). The opening of the facility is the National Scout Jamboree 2013.
On November 18, 2009, BSA announced the acquisition of a property comprising a major 10,600 acre site of what is now The Summit Bechtel Reserve. This acquisition is made possible through donations from Stephen D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation. The $ 50 million donation is the biggest in BSA history.
On October 22, 2010, BSA announced that total donations had reached $ 100 million, including a $ 25 million donation from Suzanne and Walter Scott Foundation. Stephen Bechtel and Walter Scott, Jr. is a recipient of the Scout Distinguished Eagle Award. October 22 is also the day that BSA announced the date of the National Scout Jamboree 2013 and that day was disconnected on the SBR with 22 gold shovels. Dana Scott funded the construction of Scott Scouting Valley and Scott Visitor Center. Other gifts from T. Michael and Gillian Goodrich lead to the creation of a central lake on the property of the main site now known as Lake Goodrich. Mike Goodrich is also a recipient of the Scout Distinguished Eagle Award.
Summit Bechtel Reserve is located adjacent to the River River New River Gorge. Managed by the National Park Service, the National River consists of about 70,000 acres (280 km 2 ) that cite the normally rugged Appalachian Mountains, and is a popular rafting, mountain biking, rock climbing and tourist destination. It is also home to the New River Gorge Bridge, which hosts an annual base jump event every October.
The current construction objectives at the site are the development of infrastructure and the provision of access to area resources for outdoor activities. The summit is expected to inject $ 25.3 million into the local economy annually.

Inception Edit
Plans for the Summit began in 2007 when BSA leaders began searching for permanent locations for the National Scout Jamboree, which had been held at Fort AP Hill, Virginia since 1981 and searched for other high-profile adventures for a large number of Scouts awaiting the list at three other high-rise adventure camps every year. A committee responsible for site selection and project planning has been established. The committee named the new Project Arrow, headed by Jack D. Furst. Plans for the Arrow Project grow not only include a place for the Jamboree, but also for Scout camps, high adventure bases, and training and leadership centers, all housed in the same adjacent property.
Over 80 sites in 28 countries are visited over the 18 month span and are checked as possible locations for new places. The top fifteen sites were visited in October 2008 and the list was cut into the last three sites: Saline County, Arkansas; Goshen, Rockbridge County, Virginia; and the New River area of ââWest Virginia. In February 2009 Arkansas was cut off the list, leaving Virginia and West Virginia. On August 4, 2009, BSA announced it was no longer considering the Virginia site and was looking for the feasibility of West Virginia sites being the only site for all purposes.
On November 18, 2009, BSA announced that it had selected a West Virginia site, known locally as a Garden Ground Mountain property, as the future home of Summit Bechtel Reserve.
One of the decisive factors for Project Arrow in selecting a West Virginia site is its proximity to the New River Gorge National River. Over 13 miles of property borders the park, providing Scout and Scouters access to over 70,000 acres of wilderness managed outside of Reserve properties.
On April 1, 2012, Justin D. (Dan) McCarthy was appointed Director of the Peak Group. He is responsible for all aspects of the operation of the Backup. McCarthy is a retired US Navy Admiral and serves as Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Fleet and Logistics Readiness. Scouter for life, McCarthy received the Silver Buffalo Award, the highest BSA volunteer recognition, in May 2012.

Features Edit
The Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve has three main components of activities: National High Adventure Base Paul R. Christen, James C. Justice National Scout Camp, and John D. Tickle Training and Leadership Center, each of which has unique opportunity programs. There are six subcamps, â ⬠<â ⬠The SBR property used to be a vast coal mining site, an industry where the state of West Virginia is known. The remnants of old landmines left behind in the property have created large flat areas that are terrain terrain into a series of benches, effectively pre-valuing and digging properties, and allowing many roads and infrastructure in the property to begin development with managed moving earth. The properties contain large flat areas designed to accommodate regional camp and sub-camp camps. The farthest sub-camp from the Summit core area is 1.3 miles (2.1 km), with an elevation elevation of no more than 300 feet (91 m). The pedestrian path reduces the walking time from the base camp to the core activity center to 12-15 minutes. A permanent arena on the far side of the valley holds 6000 to 8000 people, built as a natural extension to the bottom of the amphitheater bowl at the bottom, for a total arena area large enough for 80,000 people during the national Scout roaming. A lake at the center of the main site separates the base camps from the arena, action area, transportation center, and other traditional core areas. A valley at the top of the property is crossed by a three-lane pedestrian suspension bridge sponsored by CONSOL Energy. The bridge is only 800 feet (240 m) long, and is made possible by a $ 15 million donation from CONSOL. This bridge connects the west and east of the core property area. The High Adventure Area built on the property includes: The park (skateboarding), The Trax (BMX), The Pools (scuba and swimming), The Cloud (Arctic & popular robotics), Arc (sport of archery), Barrel (shooting) ), The Ropes (challenge in the trees), The Rocks (climbing, bouldering and rappelling), The Zip (zipline), Low & amp; High Gear (mountain bike center location that connects over 36 miles of mountain bike trails downhill and cross country), Canopy (canopy tour), and 'sampler' activities are available in The Scott Summit Center. ArcGIS Online supports the SBR geospatial initiatives, including mobile and web application deployments. Geographic Information System is a system designed to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, manage, and present all types of geographic data. Examples of applications utilizing supported ArcGIS Platforms in SBR include 'story maps', SBR web maps used for navigation during the 2013 National Jamboree, and 'swipe maps' comparing 2011 to 2013 developments. The SBR property also contains the Thomas S. Monson Leadership Complex, which places some training and leadership components in a prime location during construction.
